At the beginning of May 2024, River Talek curved its course, an event we will never forget. Nature humbled us, and we bowed to its powerful heed to serve and protect nature. The flood started as something small around Emboo Camp, but slowly it made its way through and into the Camp.
At the time of this event, there were no guests in the camp as we were renovating, but we had staff on the ground taking part in the renovation. Luckily, the team was tipped early on nature's call, and they went to safety just in time. This showed us how nature is beyond what we can control or understand.
After the rains, with the help of the Mara Elephant Project, our Camp Manager Sammy Kaelo, took a helicopter ride to check the impact of the flood, and the sight was scary. Nature was speaking at the top of its magnitude! At this point, we realized this would be a new version of Emboo, guided by Nature.
It is our job to take care of our fragile ecosystem. The trees by the river and the animals that need it are truly a real-life picture of how all living things are connected. It deepened our connection to nature and forged a spirit of resilience for us all.
This event did not break us, as it championed Emboo 2.0, a version that rose like a phoenix from the ashes. Our victorious team planned and gathered resources to see how we could bring this new version of Emboo into reality. In the oneness of nature, we got an endless amount of love and support from industry partners and guests from Kenya and all over the world!
During the renovation, we had some guests, who had already booked a stay in the camp for June and July, but due to the recent event, we had to move them to friendly camps in Maasai Mara, who shared our story.
The rebuilding began with us getting things in order following the aftermath of the event. We came up with better designs for the rooms, and as reconstruction continues, we also launched training for the Emboo Team to uplift and strengthen their experiences even more. We were surprised by the team's high energy during this process, and it showed how resilient we are, just like nature. It soon dawned on us that, “... it's in our nature”.
Here's a peep of our new and revamped pool:
As a planet, we need to focus on saving the environment, adopt sustainable practices, and work on planting trees and managing water better. If we do these things, we can lessen the effects of such natural events and keep our ecosystems healthy for the next generation.
This event also gives us a chance to advocate and educate. By telling this story, we hope to get more people to join us in our goal to protect our natural world, by adopting regenerative travel practices. If we work together, we can make a difference and foster a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability. As we move forward, let us remember the lesson that nature taught us. Let’s make it in our nature to be stewards of this planet and to honour and protect it for the next generations.
We would like to thank Asilia Team, for being a source of light by helping us with our guest relocations in June and July 2024. Maria Hanusch, Dianne McClarty, Katie Fewkes, and the entire Asilia Team were absolute rock stars, as they were with us every step of the way! We could not be more grateful.
We would also like to thank our other partners, including Campi Ya Kanzi, Grounded, Kenya Tourism Board, Niarra Travel, SORORAL®, Spring Valley Coffee, and many other partners, family, and friends for the love and support.
Emboo... IT'S IN OUR NATURE.
